CONCUSION SAFETY

In accordance with U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s concussion policy, any MWSC athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion or traumatic brain injury must be removed immediately from participation, including training, practice, camps, competitions, and tryouts.

The athlete may not return to MWSC programs until evaluated and cleared in writing by a qualified healthcare professional trained in the evaluation and management of concussions. Coaches must follow U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s reporting requirements, and any required medical clearance must also be submitted to U.S. Ski & Snowboard before the athlete resumes participation.

Concussion Education

All MWSC coaches are required to complete St. Luke’s concussion education training. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to complete the training to help build a shared understanding of concussion risks, recognize signs and symptoms, and respond appropriately to a suspected injury.

Baseline ImPACT Testing

Athletes ages 12 and older may complete baseline ImPACT testing through St. Luke’s. This computerized test measures memory, reaction time, processing speed, and concentration before an injury occurs.

If an athlete later sustains a suspected concussion, healthcare professionals can compare post-injury results with the baseline as part of a broader medical assessment. Testing can help inform recovery and return-to-sport decisions, but does not replace medical evaluation or written clearance.
