OVERVIEW

MWSC’s U14 Alpine Program supports young racers as they strengthen their skiing, build confidence, and become more independent athletes. Coaching recognizes that athletes develop at different rates during these years, with training that supports their individual progress.

Through a combination of focused drills, and gate training, and all-mountain skiing athletes refine their technique and learn to make tactical decisions on the racecourse. Training emphasizes Giant Slalom and Slalom, with an introduction to Super G.

As training and competition commitments grow, athletes take greater responsibility for their preparation, equipment, and goals. Races and camps offer opportunities to experience new mountains, build friendships, and connect with the wider Intermountain ski-racing community. Competition and camp opportunities may vary by birth year.

  • Athletes are expected to participate in races and series appropriate to their age group, including all U14 Intermountain Cup qualifying events for U14 athletes.

Equipment Requirements

All race equipment must meet applicable U.S. Ski & Snowboard requirements and be maintained in good condition for training and competition.

  • Race skis: One pair each of Giant Slalom (GS), Slalom (SL), and Super G (SG) skis. Where possible, an additional pair for training and slipping courses helps preserve race skis for competition.
  • Ski length: GS skis should reach approximately 5–10 cm above the athlete’s head; SL skis should reach between the chin and mouth. Consult your coach for SG ski sizing.
  • All-mountain skis: An additional pair for free skiing is recommended but not required.
  • Ski boots: Properly fitted boots with a manageable flex suited to the athlete’s size, strength, and ability. U14 athletes typically use boots in the 90–110 flex range.
  • Ski poles: At least two pairs: bent poles for GS/SG and straight poles fitted with guards for SL.
  • Helmet: A FIS-approved, hard-eared ski-racing helmet that accommodates a compatible SL chin bar.
  • Race suit: A GS/speed suit is required.
  • Shin guards: Required for slalom.
  • Back protector: Required for Super G.
  • Tuning and waxing equipment: A basic kit including an iron, side-edge bevel guide, stone, file, scraper, brush, and wax.
