OVERVIEW

MWSC’s Backcountry Team helps skiers and riders ages 12 and older explore beyond the resort while developing the skills, confidence, and judgment to travel responsibly in the mountains. Athletes explore terrain such as steeps, chutes, cliffs, and jumps through coach-guided progressions suited to their abilities and conditions.

Training combines skiing and riding development with avalanche education, backcountry travel, route-finding, winter survival, and outdoor leadership. Preparation, teamwork, and thoughtful decision-making are central to every outing.

With Brundage Mountain as its home base, the team travels to other ski areas and backcountry locations as weather and snow conditions allow. Athletes may also enter local competitions based on their interests and coaches’ recommendations.

Team Prerequisites:

  • Must attend Backcountry Boot Camp December 27-30, 2026 ensuring everyone starts the season prepared for safe and successful adventures in the mountains
  • Must be able to ski all terrain including off-piste, groomed runs, moguls, crud, and powder at home ski hills.


Equipment Requirements

  • All mountain skis
  • Alpine touring bindings
  • Compatible ski boots: Alpine or touring boots that work with the athlete’s bindings.
  • Climbing skins: Properly fitted to the athlete’s skis.
  • Avalanche transceiver (beacon): A limited number of loaners may be available.
  • Avalanche shovel
  • Avalanche probe
  • Backcountry touring backpack: Designed to carry touring equipment and avalanche safety gear.

Age: Must be a minimum of 12 years old

Ability Level: Advanced/Expert

Price Includes the required Backcountry Boot Camp: December 27-30, 2026 at Brundage.

Not included in program fee: season pass to Brundage Mountain (purchased separately through Brundage Mountain.)
