U8 Mighty Mites

McCall Winter Sports Club's U8 Alpine Ski Program is an entry level program for skiers age 6, 7 and sometimes 8. We encourage all U8 newcomers to have spent some time in the Little Ski Hill After-School Program or Brundage’s ski school, but this is not required.  The U8 program is an all mountain program with a mixture of freesking, gates and drills. An emphasis is placed on learning the fundamentals of the sport in a fun, safe and friendly environment.  This is our MIGHTY MITES team!

Athletes have the option of being on the U8 Race program or the U8 Development program.  Athletes who choose the Race program need to be strong intermediate skiers with previous experience in McCall Winter Sports Club's program or similar race program.

Head Coach, Bob Giles plus assistant coaches and apprentice coach, will break the team up into smaller groups so that developmental training is paced per the individual skier.  The USSA Skills Quest (phase 2) training program is used as a guide for training.

Mighty Mites will have the opportunity to compete in 2-3 local races at Little Ski Hill or Brundage Mountain as well as potential races at Anthony Lakes and Bogus Basin.  It is not required that athletes compete in the races.  Coaches will help determine appropriate events to attend based on an individual athlete's progression. Travel expenses are not included in program fee.

A Day in the Life

Morning warm-up outside the ARC

Morning Warm Up

Saturday mornings at Brundage Mountain are something to look forward to for these 6 and 7-year-olds.  It begins with gearing up at the Alpine Race Center (ARC) with all the athletes; big and small.  Between buckling up the boots and excited chatter among friends, the building (located at the far end of the lower parking lot) buzzes.

At 9:15am athletes circle up on the snow for the morning warm-up to prepare the body and mind.   Goals for the day are established with a plan for reaching them.  Coaches have designed fun activities to develop the fundamentals and facilitate the thrill of skiing.

Come 9:30am the team loads Bear Chair with their assigned coach. Each coach will typically have 4-6 athletes; grouped per the athletes' pace of progression.  Griz and Red Fox are go-to runs for the group before and after exploring other terrain.  A mid-morning break at the ARC for hot chocolate is a popular request from the skiers. Coaches like this too as it's a chance to talk about the morning's lesson. Athletes are welcome to bring a healthy snack from home to keep their energy high.

Training finishes at 12:30pm.  Parents meet up with their children at the ARC; where they are welcome to heat up a lunch before heading back out on the hill with their little skier.

Skiers who have registered for the Alpine Race Program will do it all again on Sunday; this time with stubbies and more obstacles to increase skillfulness with slalom and GS technique.
