The Boydstun-Hovdey Ski Heritage Scholarship committee has selected six local student-athletes to receive scholarships for alpine skiing this winter season. Of the six skiers, four are competitive alpine racers on McCall Winter Sports Club(MWSC) who compete in U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s Intermountain Division(IMD).

Among the scholarship awardees is McCall Winter Sports Club’s most tenured athlete.  Josie Leslie of Cascade started skiing when she was 3-years-old and started racing at five. Today, 13, she is preparing for the U14 IMD races with whole dedication to ski racing.

2021/2022 IMD qualifying races will begin in January, 2022. In February, Brundage Mountain Resort and Little Ski Hill will host slalom and giant slalom qualifiers for the U10/U12 North Series.

Patty Boydstun-Hovdey, 1972 Winter Olympian on the US Women’s Ski Team, is one of the members on the scholarship board. The Bodydstun-Hovdey Ski Heritage Scholarship was named after Patty Hovdey and her father John “Johnny” Boydstun who founded the ski scholarship in 2007. Fourteen years later, the Boydstun-Hovdey family continues the heritage of ski racing in McCall.

In the past, scholarship funds have been raised during the annual Idaho Gives fundraiser hosted by Idaho Nonprofit Center; and cash donations. Last winter season, Home Town Sports; Hovdey-Family owned and operated; generated $2,000 for Boydstun-Hovdey Ski Heritage Scholarships by way of their Express Tune service. The $20 add-on charge for express ski and board tunes is donated in full to the cause.

Our generational community of skiers is grateful for the family’s never-ending support and local celebration of the sport!

Scholarship funds are intended to help with program fees, race entries, and equipment. Donations may be securely made online or mailed to PO Box 38, McCall, ID 83638.
